Nurses practitioners are becoming an important part of the health care continuum. As clinicians that blend clinical expertise in diagnosing and treating health conditions with an added emphasis on disease prevention and health management, NPs bring a comprehensive perspective to health care. All NPs must complete a master's or doctoral degree program, and have advanced clinical training beyond their initial professional registered nurse preparation. NPs undergo rigorous national certification, periodic peer review, clinical outcome evaluations, and adhere to a code for ethical practices.
We’ve recently added an experienced nurse practitioner to our team at The Spine Center at OrthoIllinois and are excited about the expertise she brings to our staff and the benefits she will bring to our patients.
Nurse Practitioner Angie Johnson, M.S.N., A.N.P.-B.C., F.N.P.-B.C., joined The Spine Center at OrthoIllinois in February 2016. She is the first nurse practitioner to join RSC and works with staff to increase patient access and provide a wide variety of care to patients. She provides comprehensive evaluations and customized treatment plans.
Angie is a board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner as well as Family Nurse Practitioner. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Winona State University in Minnesota; a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati; and a post-master’s certificate from the OSF Saint Anthony College of Nursing.
Prior to joining The Spine Center at OrthoIllinois, Angie worked as an Advanced Practice Nurse at FHN in Freeport for four years. She also has eight years of experience working as an inpatient nurse caring for pre- and post-operative orthopedic and trauma patients as well as acutely and chronically ill medical, surgical and oncology patients. She is a member of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses—Rock River Valley Chapter; Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society; Golden Key International Honor Society and Minnesota Student Nursing Association. Angie has also conducted research in preventing infections after knee and hip surgeries; treating lower back pain; and managing osteoarthritis.
Very early in her career she knew she wanted to specialize in orthopedics. She brings a unique combination of strong nursing skills and a drive to be the best she can in all aspects of her life.
Nurse Practitioner Kelsey Montana MSN, APRN, FNP-C., joined The Spine Center at OrthoIllinois in November of 2020. She works closely with our other nurse practitioner, Angie Johnson, APRN, to provide comprehensive evaluations and individualized patient treatment plans.
Kelsey is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from OSF Saint Anthony’s College of Nursing in Rockford, Illinois and a master’s degree in nursing from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Kelsey is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
Prior to joining The Spine Center at OrthoIllinois, Kelsey first started her nursing career as an assistant and then transitioned to a registered nurse working for OSF Saint Anthony’s on the orthopedic surgical inpatient unit and the Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit for 5 years. Kelsey then moved to Arizona to further her nursing education and worked at Banner University Medical Center in the inpatient Neurological Intensive Care unit for 4 years prior to moving back to the Rockford area.
Kelsey has always enjoyed helping her community and advocating for her patients. She knew she wanted to specialize in orthopedic spine after many years of caring for the orthopedic population in acute care. She chose this career because she understands the importance of helping her patients improve their quality of life.
